E911 stands for Enhanced 911, and it’s the part of the 911 system that automatically ties a location to the call whether it’s a specific address or coordinates.

By partnering with the Bandwidth (an Emergency Services Telephony Provider), the Peeredge Switch natively supports Enhanced 911 services (E911) where administrators can define a physical address (real-time MSAG validated) and associate the address to an Emergency Location Identification Number (ELIN).  An ELIN is a ten digit DID number. When an incoming call on a Terminating Customer Trunk Group (inbound leg)

Kari’s Law.

Kari’s Law requires direct 911 dialing and notification capabilities for multi-line telephone systems (MLTS) (i.e. SBC/PBX).  Kari’s Law applies to all MLTS that are manufactured, imported, offered for first sale or lease, first sold or leased, or installed after February 16, 2020.

The 911 dial-pattern is the only dial-pattern supported for emergency services.  9911, 1911, +911, etc. will result in a failed call attempt.

Kari’s Law notification requirement is intended to facilitate building entry by first responders.  When a 911 call is placed on a MLTS system, the system must be configured to notify a central location on-site or off-site where someone is likely to see or hear the notification.  Examples of notification include conspicuous on-screen messages with audible alarms for security desk computers using a client application, text messages for smartphones, and email for administrators.  Notification shall include, at a minimum, the following information:

  1. The fact that a 911 call has been made;

  1. A valid callback number; and

  1. The information about the caller's location that the MLTS conveys to the public safety answering point (PSAP) with the caller to 911; provided, however, that the notification does not have to include a callback number or location information if it is technically infeasible to provide this information.

For more information on the 911 requirement for MLTS systems please see https://www.fcc.gov/mlts-911-requirements .

 Ray Baum Act (Section 506).

Section 506 of the Ray Baum Act requires that “dispatchable location” is conveyed with 911 calls to dispatch centers, regardless of the technological platform used, including 911 calls from MLTS.  Dispatchable location means a location delivered to the PSAP with a 911 call that consists of the validated street address of the calling party, plus additional information such as suite, apartment, or similar information necessary to adequately identify the location of the calling party.

For more information on the 911 requirement for MLTS systems and the compliance dates required by the Ray Baum Act please see https://www.fcc.gov/mlts-911-requirements .

Recommendations

If your customer does not have their own E911 solution, they do not require support for nomadic E911 and an email notification is sufficient, then the Peeredge Switch can be used to meet there E911 needs.
